Christian Counseling in Indiana

Technically speaking, I utilize a holistic Christian integration, experiential approach. Focusing on healthy forms of emotional expression. However, if you are like most of my clients you don’t really care about the ‘textbook’ definition of my approach. So, let me get practical with you.

In 2017, as a practicum student at Indiana Wesleyan University counseling program I sat across from a father/husband asking the standard review of services questions. His response stuck with me. He stated, ‘I feel like you actually care about me and my family.’ Soon after, I realized that he was absolutely spot on… I did genuinely care about him and his family. I cared that he felt loved. I felt compassion for his family. Friends, this is the single most important attribute I can provide, higher than the philosophy and the techniques of counseling, I genuinely care about every individual that steps into my care.

My highest desired families are those that love Jesus and want to grow in their faith. Of course, I would love and accept all clients despite religious/philosophical preferences. I have extensive experience working with couples, individuals/couples coping with trauma. Experience working with combat veterans and their families, and individuals/families struggling with addiction.

SPECIFIC APPROACHES

First and foremost, a foundation of loving Jesus and placing Him at the center of your life is key to change.

EFT (emotionally focused therapy) – This tool focuses on how each individual connected (or didn’t connect) with their primary care giver as a child. And how this connection has negatively affected their current relationships. A major focus of this tool is to strengthen communication of one’s ‘primary emotions' and to establish a secure attachment style.

Trauma focused therapy: Each person needs to be able to tell their story, even the darkness that haunts them. In bringing those dark memories to the surface, light is able to shine bright on them!

IFS (Internal Family Systems): This is an approach to trauma that will connect with some. The goal is to integrate the different parts within a person. And focus on “The Self” as the decision maker.

These are just a few theories that are commonly used in sessions. Therapy is most effective when you are ready to work hard to make a change.
